"burn" STS-117, June 08, 2007
Launch +7 seconds (approx). The shockwave came soon hereafter. Wow. There should be more camera shake in these shots than there is.
Atlantis was just about to start rolling, but here it's still in profile so you can see the main engine exhaust to the right of the boosters'. The tower bathed in flame gives some sense of scale. That's just a massive burn going down.

"joy ride" By my camera clock, we were at about Launch +16 seconds. I was privileged to meet some family members of the crew before the launch. At this point, the shock wave is hitting us, and my thoughts were for the crew's safety - amidst dumbfounded awe.
I was standing on a grandstand with a thousand or so cheering friends, family, and space-geeks, about 3.5 miles from the launch pad. The sun was beginning to set behind us which gave perfect light for viewing. It was warm and humid, but a breeze was coming at us from across the water. An altogether perfect event.

"hide and seek" Our two little ladies playing among the sunflowers.
We found the field by accident on Saturday while touring North Georgia with friends and drove back yesterday to show the girls and take some photos. It wasn't a particularly original idea as there were quite a few photogs already there.
I recommend coming at sunrise. The afternoon sun wasn't especially good for shooting. We got lucky here when a cloud gave us a bit of shade. (lecates)
"the human exhibit" The mind-numbing music loop, the Brownian bumping about, the din of inane comments, the obsession with noisy flashing toys, the 2-D gravity prison -- hallmarks of the human habitat.
For the next mammal exhibit, we'll see the noble dog... (lecates) +
